Beltane Blessings

Today we celebrate the midpoint between the height of Spring and the beginning of Summer! As the world pauses for an undetermined period of healing and rest, the wheel of the year continues to turn and remind us that life continues forward. Like the sun, we will continue to rise. Like the flowers, we will continue to bloom.

Beltane is a Gaelic holiday that asks us to celebrate everything we receive and the potential of our lives. It is the Fire Festival, a day that blesses everything to come with vigor, beauty, and power. It’s a festival of fertility, sensuality, and blessings. If you’re unsure if Beltane is something you are invited to celebrate, know that it is! It is both a cultural holiday marking the passing of time and a Pagan holiday— but Pagan isn’t a dirty word, nor is paganism evil in any way. It’s definition is simply “a person holding religious beliefs other than those of the main world religions.” No need to be afraid!

This year, Beltane is perhaps especially potent. It comes at a time when many of us are afraid, uncertain, and may not feel in the spirit to celebrate. That is exactly why it’s the perfect time to note this special date.

Consider fire, the thing that allows our sun to shine: if we touch it, we’re burned, but without it, we can freeze. It can allow us to thrive, to cook, to see, or it can ravage our lives and burn down our forests. In this time, it’s important that we ask ourselves how this period of looking inward can fuel the future. How can we utilize this powerful moment in the grand story of humankind to till the soil of what is to come?

One of the simplest ways to live the spirit of this day is to light a candle. Think about how much this moment will inform our humanity, our spirit of community, our love for one another. Yes, there are valid fears right now, and we don’t know what the outcome will be. However, we can begin to take responsibility for what’s to come by focusing on what we want this experience to mean in the days to come. How can we tend the flame of this pandemic to warm our future instead of allowing our futures to burn to the ground? Beltane reminds us that this powerful moment has the power to do either, but it is up to us to come together, tend our fires at home, and to plant seeds for the future.

You and I hold the tinderbox for the months and years ahead. If you’d like to learn more about how to harness the power of this beautiful day, I recommend visiting; since they can’t hold their usual enormous festival this year, they’ve made the festival (and so much juicy information and history about the holiday) virtual so we can all celebrate safely, from a distance.

Blessings and love to each and every one of you. May we come together in spirit until we can come together in person once again.
